Corn for Dry Milling
Specifications for "food grade" corn differ from end-user to end-user. Only you can define the specifications needed to produce your product in your facility. Through our close working relationships with producers, we are able to select truckloads and accumulate grain that will best meet your needs. Every year, CGB performs extensive laboratory testing on harvest samples to evaluate hybrids and the effect of growing conditions in an effort to select Premium Grains SM that meet the demand specifications of our dry milling customers.
Genetics
Some corn hybrids are genetically disposed to being better suited for dry milling purposes. Endosperm hardness, kernel size, kernel density, kernel shape, cob color, germ to grit ratio, and ease of pericarp removal are all characteristics important to dry millers that are influenced by genetics. Encouraging the producer to choose the hybrid or hybrids best suited for your process is only the beginning.
Growing Conditions
Growing conditions vary by location each year. CGB originates grain through more than 60 elevators primarily located on the Mississippi, Ohio, and Illinois Rivers. Through our extensive sampling and testing protocol, we compile data on each year's crop. We evaluate food grade type hybrids for moisture, test weight, density, kernel weight, thins, stress cracks, protein, oil, starch, fiber, etc. From that information, we are able to assess what areas produced the highest quality corn and select dry milling corn to suit the individual specifications of our Premium Grains SM customers.
Handling
Just because corn has the right genetic disposition to meet your dry milling specifications or just because it was grown under the best possible conditions still doesn't mean that you are going to be successful in processing the corn efficiently. By avoiding corn that was high-temperature dried, excluding corn with significant levels of stress cracks, and screening samples for chemical and biological contamination, CGB completes the raw materials selection process for Premium Grains SM used for food purposes.
Commitment
CGB is working closely with producers, seed companies, and academics to improve the processes of our dry milling customers. Since every dry mill has different objectives, processes, and equipment, communication between the raw material supplier and the dry miller is essential. We look forward to customizing a Premium Grains SM program to fit your dry milling operation.
