Our History

Our commitment to agriculture and transportation began over 50 years ago when our founder had an idea – there was a better way to trade barge freight by merchandising the tariff rates.

With just three employees in St. Louis, MO, this innovative idea fueled by a strong entrepreneurial spirit led to the creation of Consolidated Grain and Barge Co. (CGB Co.), thereby revolutionizing the barge freight industry.

Over the course of the next several years, CGB Co. continued to grow and expand its business by becoming a grain trading company. In the early 1970s, CGB Co. entered the grain business in a more traditional manner by purchasing property on the Illinois River. Through several more purchases and acquisitions, the once small team became a strong, diverse company with strategic locations throughout Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.

Today, Consolidated Grain and Barge Co. is part of a larger group of companies now belonging to CGB Enterprises, Inc. (CGB). CGB operates over 113 grain facilities with access to barge, rail and/or truck across the Midwest and beyond. In addition to grain facilities, the company has sizable operations in logistics and transportation, agri-finance, soybean processing, producer risk management, and other related businesses.
